Your business categories inform your customers about what your business does. It helps your business connect you with customers who search for your products or services.
For example, if your primary category is “Pizza restaurant,” we might show your business in someone’s local search result when they search for Restaurants
, Italian Restaurants
, or Pizza
. The categories you select affect your local ranking on Google. Learn more about local ranking.
Based on your business type, the categories you select might be also used to assign a label to your business.
Understand business categories
Select a primary category that best describes your business. When you choose your category, select a specific category from the list that shows up. For example, instead of "Salon," choose “Nail salon.”
If the specific category you want isn't available, select a general category that describes your business. You can’t create your own category.
To inform your customers about special departments or services, select additional categories. Do not select a category for every product or service. Instead, use a few categories from the provided list to describe.
- Example: If you have a grocery store with a bakery and deli, select “Grocery store” as your primary category, then add “Bakery” and “Deli” as additional categories. Learn more about guidelines for selecting your categories.
If your business has independent, public-facing departments that are separately owned and operated within your location, they should have their own Business Profiles. Do not add their categories to your profile.
- Example: If your business is a health club that has an independently-operated cafe, do not add the category "Cafe." The cafe should have its own Business Profile with "Cafe" as its primary category. Learn more about guidelines for representing departments within other businesses.
Based on your business category, you might notice special features available for your Business Profile.
