You can remove unwanted pop-ups, fix network issues and address other issues with safety reset without losing your local data and apps.
Important:
- When you use safety reset, it turns off extensions and resets your settings to safe defaults.
- If you use your Chromebook at work or school and you can’t reset it, ask your administrator for help.
- On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings

- Under 'Reset', select Safety reset.
- Your screen may go black for a few seconds.
- On your screen, you’ll get a confirmation message saying, 'Your device is back to safety' and asking you to:
- Re-enable extensions
- Review network and input settings that were set to defaults
- Complete Google Account Security Check-Up
- Select Done.

When you reset your Chromebook's network and input settings, this action will:
- Reset Chrome settings and Chrome shortcuts
- Disable extensions
- Delete cookies and other temporary site data
Your bookmarks, history and saved passwords won't be affected. This won't change the sync settings but will sync the results, like disabled extensions and settings. It can also improve your user experience on other synced browsers or Chromebooks.
