Understand your Pixel battery

Most phones and tablets, like Pixel phones, use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries which have a limited number of charge cycles and will eventually need to be replaced. All batteries are consumable components and aren’t meant to last indefinitely. Many factors like temperature, charging and discharging, and device usage contribute to a decrease in your battery’s capacity. This results in shorter battery runtime or a decreased ability to deliver power in extreme temperatures.

When charged as recommended, your Pixel phone’s battery is designed to keep at least 80% of its initial capacity up to a certain number of charge cycles. Capacity is estimated by the battery’s fuel gauge. Your battery’s actual lifespan depends on usage patterns and other factors.

Your Pixel battery’s charge cycle count is the number of times the battery has completed a full discharge and recharge of the battery, which includes partial discharges. For example, if you used your Pixel phone from 100% charge to 50% charge and then recharged it to 100%, this is calculated as 0.5 cycles.

Rated charge cycles by Pixel phone:

Tip: Charge your Pixel phone in a cool place, about 25℃ or 78℉, with a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger.

To check your phone’s cycle count on Pixel 8a and later:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap About phone and then Battery information.

Battery health

With Battery health, you get an estimate of your device’s remaining battery capacity compared to its original capacity. It indicates whether the battery capacity is “Reduced” or “Normal.” Over time, battery capacity decreases in all lithium ion batteries. When the capacity is labeled as “Reduced,” Google recommends replacing your battery.

Check your battery health & battery capacity

Important:

  • This feature is only available on Pixel 8a and later.
  • The feature is not available on Pixel Tablet.

To view your battery health status and explore tips to extend your battery’s lifespan:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery health.
  3. Find your battery health status which indicates “Normal” or “Reduced.”

Tip: To check estimated battery capacity, tap Battery and then Battery health and then Battery capacity.

Understand different Battery health statuses

Your phone’s Battery health status is based on remaining battery capacity, which is an estimated percentage of charge that a battery can hold compared to when it was new. Over time, battery capacity decreases in all lithium ion batteries. Initial battery health values are based on lab results and may differ from your actual battery state.

Here are the different health statuses and what they mean:

  • Normal: Battery capacity is within normal limits.
  • Reduced: Battery reached capacity is below 80%.
  • Unavailable: Can’t determine your battery status.

Tip: Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro don’t indicate battery health status.

Replace your battery

Lithium-ion batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and will eventually need to be replaced. We recommend you replace your battery for:

When you replace your aged battery:

  • It improves your phone’s performance in cold or warm ambient temperatures.
  • It increases runtime.
  • It may help prolong your Pixel phone’s useful life.

If you notice a decrease in your phone’s runtime or your battery reaches the rated cycle charge count, we recommend that you replace your battery. Go to Pixel’s support page for your available options.

For additional support:

Battery health assistance

Important:

  • This feature is available on Pixel 6a and later.
  • On Pixel 9a, the feature is on by default and can’t be turned off.
  • The feature is not available on Pixel Tablet.

Lithium-ion batteries are consumable components that eventually require replacement. As your battery ages, Battery health assistance helps manage its long term health and performance. This software adjusts the battery’s maximum voltage in stages. It starts at 200 charge cycles and continues gradually until 1000 charge cycles. This helps stabilize battery performance and aging.

As your battery ages, you may notice small decreases in your battery’s runtime. Based on adjusted capacity, Battery health assistance also tunes the phone’s charging speed. You may notice a slight change in battery charging performance.

Turn Battery health assistance on or off

Important:

  • This only applies to Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
  • To help maintain the health and performance of the battery, we recommend that you keep this feature on.

If you have a Pixel 6a to Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you can turn assistance on or off.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery health and then Battery health assistance.
  3. Turn Use battery health assistance on or off.

You can’t customize or turn off Battery health assistance settings on Pixel 9a.

Manage devices with a swollen battery

A swollen battery doesn’t typically present a safety hazard provided you exercise extra caution. They can, however, cause liquids or dust to enter the device more easily. Exposed batteries are more susceptible to accidental damage (e.g. by puncture) and can potentially cause the battery to overheat and cause injury. Here are some best practices if you have a swollen battery.

Do Do not
  • Retrieve personal data or perform a factory reset to “wipe” device data before you return or recycle the device.
  • Allow your device battery to completely discharge. To do this, place the device on a table or countertop and let it sit, unused, for several days until the battery naturally drains.
  • If needed, reach out to Google customer support for further guidance.
  • Try to “press down” or force the cover glass or back cover into the phone.
  • Try to pry open the enclosure.
  • Try to remove the swollen battery from the device.
  • Attempt to repair or fix your swollen battery or dissemble your device by yourself.
